BOOK REVIEW: "Be the Ultimate Assistant" by Bonnie Low-Kramen
Review by Werner Leutert, Home Staffing Network Newsletter
Ms. Low-Kramen has been the personal assistant to actress Olympia Dukakis.
As a founding member of the New York Celebrity Assistants, she is passionate about her profession and has written this book to provide insights about the work and clear up misconceptions often promoted by the media about personal assistants. It reminded me of the misconceptions about butlers.
Subtitled "A celebrity assistant’s secrets to working with any high-powered employer", I found this book to be very interesting and I believe it would be a good read for all aspiring or in service house managers, butlers and other private service staff. I say this because Ms. Low Kramen does a great job providing the "true sense of what the life of a celebrity personal assistant is all about". She gives the reader "some tools and ideas about how to pursue the work".
As a former active Estate Manager and Butler myself, the lead chapter titled "What it takes" seems very familiar- foremost being attitude. Bonnie goes on to discuss various aspects of attitude- flexibility, sensitivity and humor among them. I really like the many anecdotes throughout the book which connect real experiences of the author with the topic at hand.
My favorite chapter is "Good Manners Matter". I think it is so important to promote good manners. In short order, Bonnie covers topics from please and thank you to email courtesy and hand written notes, behaviors which bespeak a quality person.
Much of this book is about the "Good Side" of celebrity personal assisting as being intense and rewarding in many ways. Bonnie also devotes a chapter to the "Dark Side" and some of the abuse situations which can occur . "Fortunately most celebrities value their assistants and treat them well".
For those readers interested in becoming a personal assistant, there is much useful information in the chapter "How to get the Job". Of use to all of us in the private service field is the "Resources to Go" chapter.
Ms. Low-Kramen's 116 page book, Be the Ultimate Assistant, is easy to read and understand. No new theories or revelations for those readers in successful private service careers, just telling it like it is in a comprehensive manner. The interwoven stories are fun. Overall, this is a great book which should inspire new people interested in service careers and, most specifically, celebrity personal assisting. Visit www.bonnielowkramen.com for more information.
